Building on the Ruins: The Full, Unvarnished Story of ONTON and Our Return

The honest history of ONTON: 200k users, security disclosures, Iran-Israel war impact, $ONIT on STON.fi, and our rebirth as the Luma of Telegram.

M
Mahdi Farimani
Founder & Lead Architect, ONTON

An Open Letter from the Founder:
Most crypto projects run away from their past. When markets crash or things don't go as planned, teams rebrand, abandon tokens, or scrub their channels.

We refuse to do that.

In this manifesto, we document every single high and low of ONTON from our 2024 launch to our 2026 rebirth: our 200,000-user viral surge, the November 2024 security vulnerability, the Genesis ONION NFT presale, the June 2025 military conflict that forced an emergency TGE halt, our $ONIT DEX listing on STON.fi, the strategic drift into casual mini-games, and the subsequent silence.

Above all, this is our binding OG Covenant to the early believers who stood by us in the ruins: how your Genesis NFTs, $ONIT tokens, and Pioneer SBTs are restored to central utility in the new ONTON Event OS.

Part 1: The Spark — Building the Luma of Web3 (Summer 2024)

In June 2024, we started ONTON with a clear, singular realization:
Event ticketing was completely broken for the 900+ million users of Telegram.

Event organizers hosting crypto meetups in Dubai, Singapore, and Berlin were forcing attendees to leave Telegram, open mobile browsers, deal with popup ad-blockers, connect desktop extension wallets, and then manually request access to private Telegram chats. Over 40% of prospective guests dropped off before finishing registration.

We launched @theontonbot to fix this forever:

  • 1-Tap RSVPs: Direct native Telegram Mini App experience inside Telegram.
  • TON Wallet Connect: Seamless on-chain verification without leaving the chat.
  • Soulbound Tokens (SBTs): Verifiable digital passport badges proving attendance.

The response was immediate and explosive:

  • By July 2024, over 75,000 users had registered for 150+ community events.
  • By mid-September 2024, we passed 100,000 monthly active users.
  • A week later, we doubled to 200,000 monthly active users.
  • We were featured in the official Telegram Apps Center (@tapps_bot) and co-hosted meetups with the TON Foundation, TON Society, and ecosystem leaders across Helsinki, Singapore, and Bali.

Part 2: The Security Incident & Radical Accountability (November 2024)

Growth masked underlying technical debt. On November 18, 2024, a persistent scanner discovered an unauthenticated endpoint in our API that leaked guest list metadata for a specific private event.

In Web3, many teams conceal breaches. We chose transparency. On December 29, 2024, we released an open public disclosure (Post #154), shut down the endpoint, audited our permissions model, and guided the ethical reporter to the TON Society HackenProof bug bounty program.

That crucible taught us our first hard engineering rule: never sacrifice cryptographic security for speed.

Part 3: The Gamification Trap & Genesis ONIONs (Spring 2025)

By early 2025, the broader TON ecosystem was swept up by "tap-to-earn" games and points farming. We made a strategic error: we let the hype dictate our roadmap.

Instead of doubling down exclusively on enterprise event ticketing software, we introduced:

  • ONTON Points & Quests: Daily tasks and referral rewards.
  • The Genesis ONIONs NFT Collection: 50,000 total supply (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum merge) launched with TON Society via a "Spin-to-Reserve" mechanic.

Thousands of community members spent their TON to spin for rare NFTs, expecting immediate token airdrops and life-changing returns. On May 30, 2025, with over 10,000 views on our channel, we took the official Genesis Season Snapshot.

We had built immense community expectation. But we were about to hit a wall that no code could prevent.

Part 4: The War & The Emergency TGE Freeze (June 20, 2025)

Our Token Generation Event (TGE) was scheduled for June 2025. The claim interface went live on June 10. Then, the real world intervened.

On June 20, 2025, we broadcast an emergency announcement (Post #419, 12.6k views):

"Due to the unforeseen and escalating conflict between Iran and Israel — and given that the ONTON core team is currently based in Iran — we must delay today's scheduled Token Generation Event (TGE)... this temporary delay is necessary to ensure that all key contributors, including our founder and core team members, can participate safely and effectively."

Airstrikes, emergency sirens, and nationwide internet blackouts shut down our operations. As founders, we were managing team physical safety while trying to protect smart contract deployment keys.

Six days later, as connectivity partially returned, we resumed operations. Rather than seeking predatory private venture capital, we launched the ONION Fair Launch Auction on TBook throughout July 2025 to put the tokens directly in community hands.

Part 5: The DEX Listing, Casual Mini-Games, and the Silence

On August 22, 2025, following a live video AMA on Binance Live, we officially launched our token under the ticker $ONIT on the STON.fi DEX (EQCYFlnasDS18rfSF_CLRT0W5DJOYNbZKWJzaCK4gwVzlZPc).

Eight days later, on August 30, 2025 (Post #512), we permanently revoked all contract admin rights, capping the supply at exactly 1,000,000,000 $ONIT. No one — not even our team — could ever inflate the supply.

But then we lost our way.

Faced with challenging crypto market conditions and low DEX liquidity, we attempted to maintain community engagement by launching casual Telegram mini-games: 2048, Math Battle, and Color Memory tournaments for 500 $ONIT prizes.

It was the wrong move. Event organizers didn't care about 2048; they needed an enterprise event operating system. Meanwhile, $ONIT staking pools on JVault offered APY without external software revenue to sustain it.

On October 21, 2025 (Post #525), we announced a partnership with ZYNC.

And then... the channel went dark.

For nearly a year, @ontonlive stood silent. We didn't exit scam. We didn't dump tokens. But our silence hurt our community just as much. Early NFT holders who had supported us felt stranded. The ruins of the past were all that remained.

Part 6: The Return to First Principles (ONTON 2.1)

During the quiet months of 2026, we relocated, restructured our engineering foundation, and rebuilt ONTON from first principles around a clear mission: Events with Verified Attendance — a reliable, zero-friction Luma alternative.

Here is what is built, tested, and enforced in our codebase today:

  1. Permissionless Creation & Free Events Forever: We eliminated the 1 TON organizer gate, upfront event creation fees, and pre-moderation queues. Anyone can launch an event and get a live shareable link in under 60 seconds.
  2. Wallet-Optional Attendee Experience: Attendees register in 1 tap, receive automated single-use Telegram group invite links, and check in at the door using 20-second rotating TOTP QR passes (or online secret phrases) — with zero crypto wallet required.
  3. 633,000+ Verified Check-Ins Restored & Dual-Tier Credentials: We decoupled completely from defunct third-party credential APIs and migrated all 332,000+ credential holders into ONTON's sovereign passport (My Badges). Every check-in issues an instant, free off-chain Merkle-verified credential (cSBT), with optional 1-tap crystallization into a permanent on-chain TEP-85 Soulbound Token (0.1 TON).
  4. 3% Non-Custodial Crypto & 1-Tap Telegram Stars Checkout: For paid events, attendees pay in 1 tap via Telegram Stars (Apple Pay / Google Pay, 5% fee) or TON/USDT (3% non-custodial split routed 97% directly to the organizer's wallet at checkout).
  5. Built-In Viral Referral Engine: Every attendee gets a personal referral link for any event, earning +10 ONTON Points and instant bot confirmations for every friend who registers or buys a ticket.

Part 7: The 2026 Restitution Covenant — What Is Enforced in Code Today

We refuse to make speculative promises we cannot enforce in software. Instead, we built concrete, verifiable restitution directly into ONTON 2.1:

1. For Legacy Organizers (Founding Organizers Program)

Every pioneer who previously paid the 1 TON organizer onboarding fee has been automatically backfilled in our database (migration 0128) as a Founding Organizer:

  • 🏅 Permanent Founding Organizer Badge: Displayed on your profile and every event page you host.
  • 🎟️ 100 Fee-Waiver Tickets (0% Platform Fee): Your first 100 paid ticket sales carry a 0.0% platform fee — 100% of the ticket revenue routes directly to you.

2. For All 332,000+ Past Attendees & Badge Holders

  • 🎖️ Complete Historical Passport Restored: Every past event check-in and legacy reward from 2024–2025 is preserved in your My Badges tab inside @theontonbot.
  • ⛓️ On-Demand On-Chain Upgrade: Any historical off-chain attendance record can be permanently minted onto the TON blockchain as a sovereign TEP-85 Soulbound Token at any time.

3. For $ONIT & Genesis ONION Holders

  • 🔒 Immutable Token Supply & 625.51M Proof-of-Lock: $ONIT (EQBIMlTIsWgwMZA1IBqsU4CDEibDCke0LdEIXP0ukjaq4U9L / STON.fi pool EQCYFlnasDS18rfSF_CLRT0W5DJOYNbZKWJzaCK4gwVzlZPc) remains permanently hard-capped at 1,000,000,000 tokens with mint admin keys revoked forever, and all 625,510,543 $ONIT across the 6 Macro Plans (DAO, Ecosystem, Team, Advisors, Private Sale, Integration Grants) remain 100% locked on-chain until the $20M FDV milestone.
  • 🔓 Native ONIT Rescue & Staking Vault (/my/vault & /dao): Because TBook discontinued its legacy claim website, we indexed all 940 smart contracts on TON Mainnet directly inside ONTON (/my/vault in @theontonbot and onton.live/dao — see $ONIT & Proof-of-Lock Vault in the ONTON Wiki) so Genesis NFT and FairLaunch holders can rescue their unlocked $ONIT in 1 tap and stake in the 20,000,000 $ONIT JVault Pool with up to 2.0x Genesis NFT governance weight multipliers.
  • 📈 25% DAO Revenue Buyback Covenant & 2.5% Pro Organizer Tier: Rather than artificial mini-game emissions, ONTON routes 25% of net platform fee revenue (from the 3% crypto ticketing split, 5% Telegram Stars fee, and 0.1 TON on-chain SBT upgrades) into the ONTON DAO Buyback & Staking Yield Warchest, while organizers holding/staking $\ge 10,000\text{ ONIT}$ (or $\ge 500\text{ ONTON Points}$) unlock a 50% platform fee discount (2.5% Pro Tier).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $ONIT being replaced by a new token?

No. We are not launching a second token. $ONIT on STON.fi remains the sole token of the ONTON ecosystem, with contract admin keys permanently revoked.

How do I claim my unlocked $ONIT if TBook's website is offline?

Open @theontonbot $\to$ My $\to$ ONIT Vault & Staking (/my/vault) or visit onton.live/dao to inspect your on-chain TBook FairLock contract and claim unlocked Genesis NFT or FairLaunch allocations directly via TonConnect or Tonkeeper.

What happened to my past TON Society / ONTON event badges?

They are safe and restored. Open @theontonbot and tap My Badges to view all your historical check-ins, verify your off-chain Merkle proofs, or upgrade any record to an on-chain TEP-85 SBT.

How do Founding Organizers claim their 100 fee-waiver tickets?

It is already active in your account. When you create a paid event on @theontonbot, the checkout engine (computeSplit) automatically applies a 0% platform fee to your first 100 tickets sold.
